The Daily MLB Rundown – DraftKings MLB DFS Picks – August 8, 2020 (8/8/20)

The Main Slate on Saturday night is an eight game slate – with clear forecasts across the board so you won’t have to worry about any weather when it comes to building line-ups for tonight.  Let’s have a look at some ways to approach line-up construction for the MLB Main Slate on Saturday night!

Approach to Pitching

My favourite two options on the mound tonight are both pretty chalky, led by Chris Paddack ($7,900) – who is inexplicably priced below $8k going up against the D-Backs in a game where Arizona is projected for 3.2 runs.  Paddack’s strike-outs are down a little bit this year at 7.9 K/9 – but the sample size is tiny, and I expect the number to creep up to the range we saw from the young righty a year ago (9.79 K/9).  I would have no issue if you just hit the lock button on him tonight as he is a high floor, high ceiling option for this start tonight.

The second option that I really like tonight is 24 year old lefty, David Peterson ($7,200) as he goes up against the Marlins, who are projected for 3.9 runs tonight.  The Marlins have one of the worst line-ups in baseball – and I like what I’ve seen so far from Peterson in a very small MLB sample size.  He likely needs some polish and time to adjust to the majors, but thankfully the Marlins are a poor line-up, and Peterson has a track record of success in the minors.  Last season in AA, he pitched to a 3.19 FIP, a 2.91 xFIP while punching out 9.47 per nine and only issuing 2.87 BB/9.

Kershaw is in play going up against the Giants – but for over $10k, I’m not sure he’s stretched out enough to warrant it.  If you have extra cash on the table though I wouldn’t argue with paying up for him tonight.

I’ve included a couple other options that I like for tonight on the cheat sheet below!

Approach to Hitting

The Dodgers are once again my favourite hitting stack to target tonight, checking in with the second highest projected total on the board as they get another crack at Johnny Cueto tonight.  The usual suspects are in play for the Dodgers, and I have included them on the cheat sheet below for your reference.

As for Boston, who have the highest projected total on the board, I have no problem going under-weight exposure to them tonight as they go up against Chase Anderson, and likely Anthony Kay and/or Thomas Hatch, who will piggyback off of Anderson tonight.  I think the Jays arms will be able to do enough to keep crooked numbers from going up on the board tonight & I have no problem focusing my exposure elsewhere.

If you are looking for a pivot off of the Dodgers (or Boston if you go that route) for tonight’s action, have a look at the Angels as they go up against Kolby Allard – a pitcher that doesn’t miss many bats (less than 7 K/9 in his MLB career), and who was mediocre last season in a significant minor league sample with a mid 4’s FIP and xFIP to go along with allowing 1.23 HR/9.  Going up against a line-up that has some elite RH sticks, I wouldn’t be shocked to see the likes of Trout and company get to him early.  I’ve included my favourite options from the Angels to go stacking with below:

  • OF Mike Trout ($6,000)
  • 3B Anthony Rendon ($5,600)
  • OF Justin Upton ($4,100)
  • 1B/OF Shohei Ohtani ($4,600)
  • 2B/3B David Fletcher ($4,700)
