Seventy-six individuals were arrested in Los Angeles after celebrations turned to riots following the NBA championship win of the Los Angeles Lakers over the Miami Heat Sunday night.
In a statement, the Los Angeles Police Department said that the “largely peaceful” gathering of more than 1,000 people turned violent when “unruly individuals… began throwing glass bottles, rocks, and other projectiles at officers.” Police then told the crowd to disperse, but noted that few people complied. Instead, a large portion of the crowd began vandalizing businesses and assaulting officers. A bus was set on fire and fireworks detonated in the streets.
Eight officers were injured and more than 30 buildings were damaged.
In one video, rioters could be seen going after police cars before more officers were brought to the scene to control the violence.
“It would have been nice if there were zero [arrests] and then we could have just celebrated peacefully,” said LAPD officer Drake Madison. “Unfortunately, when it gets to this point, it’s usually because things are getting a little out of control.”
