TWO schools in Portlaoise confirmed one case of Covid-19 each over the weekend.
The management of the CBS Secondary School for Boys in St. Mary provided the following information to the parents of the students: “We have been informed by the HSE that one of our students tested positive for Covid-19 in their fifth year. We wish this student a speedy and full recovery.
‘We have been advised by the Department of Health at HSE Midlands that our fifth year students should be homeschooled by Wednesday October 21st. If your son has a sibling in school in his fifth year, they should attend as usual. For all other year groups, school will continue as usual. ‚
The parents of students attending Portlaoise College have also been informed by the school management about a first year student who tested positive for Covid.
The message says: “We would like to inform you that a confirmed case of Covid has been found in the school.”
A parent of one of the first year students informed them Laois Nationalist that she received the letter informing her that her child was “identified as a casual contact”.
She said the school wrote that “all HSE advice and protocols were followed and all students deemed to be close or casual contacts were contacted separately”.
In a separate letter to parents, the HSE stated that “the case went to school on Tuesday, October 6th and Wednesday, October 7th, possibly infectious”.
The HSE letter to the woman who addressed the Laois Nationalist He also said: “Your child has not been identified as a close contact and does not need to be excluded from school. Please do not worry. The risk of your child having Covid-19 is very low. ‚
The mother, who refused to be identified, said, “After we got the news from the school, we held a family reunion. We decided that going to school at the moment is not a good idea. We don’t want to endanger our child’s health. He has no symptoms of Covid-19 and we want to keep it that way.
“With classroom windows and doors open, it is inevitable that children and teachers will get sick and pass colds and flu to each other and bring them home to their families where some members may have weakened immune systems.
“However, we will make sure that this doesn’t affect our child’s education as the school uses Google Classroom. We will exercise our right to raise our child at home until they get better, which we hope will not be long. “
